Recognizing The Four Stages Of Bedsores

Many nursing home patients struggle with mobility and spend long periods of time confined to a bed or wheelchair. Nursing home staff must carefully monitor these residents, regularly adjusting their position to prevent undue stress on any single point of the body.

Overworked or negligent care providers may fail to provide the attention residents need. If this happens, your loved one may suffer from the development of painful bed sores. These originate from a lack of blood flow to a certain area. Depending upon their severity, they can inflict a great degree of discomfort and harm.

Ready To Advocate For Your Loved One

At the Law Offices of Sloane L. Fish, LLC, we do not tolerate nursing home neglect or abuse. Four Stages Of Developing Bedsores

The development of bedsores and related complications is often an indication of patient neglect. Below are some common signs of pressure sores so you can quickly identify whether your loved one is developing this painful condition:

  • Stage 1: Only the top layer of skin is affected. Individuals may notice burning, itching, skin discoloration, spots that feel hard or soft, spots that feel cooler or warmer.
  • Stage 2: The sore develops deeper into the skin and surrounding tissue. The sore is painful, warm to the touch and swollen. The individual may notice an open wound or puss-filled blister.
  • Stage 3: Sores have further developed into the individual’s fat tissue. Sores may let off an odor, look like a crater and show signs of infection. If skin tissue has died, the skin may be black around the sore.
  • Stage 4: These sores may begin to affect the individual’s muscles or ligaments. Surrounding skin is black and shows signs of inflection such as pus or heat. At this point, the sore will be deep and large. In some cases, you may be able to see parts of the sufferer’s muscles or bone.

If you suspect a bed sore, seek medical treatment for your loved one. We also recommend contacting our team, so we can gather relevant evidence and protect your loved one’s well-being.
